49 more MPs suspended from Lok Sabha today

49 more MPs including Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, Karti Chidambaram, NC leader Farooq Abdullah, and NCP Supriya Sule got suspended from Lok Sabha for disrupting proceedings. A total of 141 parliaments have been suspended this year- 95 from Lok Sabha and 46 from Rajya Sabha.

MPs continued their protest and have been pressing statements from both Amit Shah and Narendra Modi on the security breach.  Both the houses were adjourned till 2 pm today due to the protest. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the Opposition was sulking over the defeat in the recent assembly polls.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said to the media that: “It is clear that they want an Opposition-mukt Lok Sabha and they will do something similar in Rajya Sabha. At this point, unfortunately, we have to start writing obituaries for Parliamentary democracy in India…Today, in solidarity with my colleagues, I too joined the protest and everybody present has been suspended for the rest of the session which means they want to pass their Bills without any discussion”.

The suspension spree started last week Opposition Members began requesting a statement from the Home Minister a day after the security breach. Owing to their disruptive conduct, thirteen Lok Sabha members and one Rajya Sabha member were suspended. Opposition MPs resumed their protest yesterday. Across both Houses, this resulted in a record 79 suspensions. Today’s 49 adds to the spree.
