Evaluating Perspectives on Marriage Age in among Muslim Girls in Old Delhi: Report

Introduction:

Awaz-e-Khwateen conducted a comprehensive survey in two government girls’ schools in Old Delhi to gauge the opinions regarding the suitable age for marriage among young girls. The survey aimed to understand the aspirations of girls towards education and the impact of societal norms on their choices.

Methodology:

The survey targeted a sample size of 300 girls across the selected schools. Structured interviews and questionnaires were employed to gather qualitative and quantitative data on their views regarding the acceptable age for marriage. 

Key Findings:

1. Preference for Higher Education: A striking 97% of the respondents expressed a strong desire to pursue higher education and follow their dreams before considering marriage.
2. Limited Approval for Early Marriage: Only 3 out of 200 girls indicated acceptance of the age of 16 for marriage, highlighting a significant disparity in societal expectations versus individual aspirations.

The overwhelming majority of Muslim girls in Old Delhi reject the notion of marriage at the age of 16, emphasizing the need for cultural and societal narratives that align with their aspirations for education and personal development.

Conclusion:

The survey underscores a clear preference among girls in Old Delhi for delayed marriages, aligning with their aspirations for higher education and personal development. These findings emphasize the importance of empowering girls to pursue their dreams and challenge societal norms that may hinder their educational and career pursuits.

Recommendations:

1. Advocacy for awareness programs on the significance of girls’ education.
2. Collaboration with local communities to promote discussions around changing societal norms.
3. Encouragement of mentorship programs to support girls in achieving their academic and professional goals.

This report aims to contribute valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders to create an environment that fosters the educational and aspirational growth of young girls in Old Delhi.
