AMU strengthens green mission with ‘Plantation Drive 2.0’

Aligarh, June 29: Strengthening its commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological stewardship, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Guest House organized “Plantation Drive 2.0” at University Guest House No. 1 in collaboration with the Department of Land and Gardens. The initiative reflected the University’s sustained efforts to promote a cleaner, greener and environmentally conscious campus.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon and former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Gulrez graced the occasion by planting saplings of Kachnar and Tabebuia argentea, species known for their ecological and ornamental value, enhancing the natural beauty of the Guest House premises and promoting AMU’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.

On this occasion, Prof. Naima Khatoon said, “Environmental conservation is a shared responsibility. Through sustained plantation drives and active community participation, AMU is nurturing a culture of ecological consciousness among students, faculty and staff.”

Former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Gulrez remarked, “Planting native and climate-resilient species is vital for preserving ecological balance and supporting India’s vision of achieving Net Zero emissions.”

The plantation campaign emphasized the importance of increasing green cover, conserving native plant species and promoting environmental awareness across the University. The initiative forms part of AMU’s broader commitment to creating a sustainable campus through regular afforestation drives and environmentally responsible practices.

Saplings were also planted by officials and faculty members, including Prof. Mohammad Muzammil, Prof. Shakil Ahmad, Prof. Izhar Farooqui, Prof. Mohd Hasan, Prof. Vibha Sharma, Prof. Mohd Pervaiz, Prof. Riaz Ahmad, Dr. Shamim Ahmad, Prof. Zia Siddiqui, Prof. Abid Ali Khan, Prof. Orus Ilyas, Prof. Safia Akhtar Kazmi, Prof. Anwar Shahzad, Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi and several others, who collectively reaffirmed the University’s resolve to build a greener, cleaner and environmentally sustainable campus for generations to come.
