On Tuesday (October 20, 2026), U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the Oval Office that India and the U.S. were close to reaching a trade deal. He said both countries wanted an agreement and that a deal was likely soon.
President Donald Trump said the new trade deal between India and the U.S. would be different from their previous agreements.
His statement came during U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India. During the visit, Rubio discussed strengthening ties between the two countries in trade, energy, technology, defence and people-to-people relations.
Earlier this month, India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Milwaukee and Washington to discuss the trade deal.
In February, India and the U.S. agreed on a plan for the first phase of their trade agreement. However, changes in U.S. tariffs have led both countries to continue talks on the deal.
