Jamia Marks 145th Birth Anniversary of Munshi Premchand with Special Exhibition

New Delhi, August 11, 2025 –
The Premchand Archives and Literary Centre (JPALC) at Jamia Millia Islamia has closed a week-long exhibition on August 8, in commemoration of 145 anniversaries of Munshi Premchand’s (1880-1936) birth and reaffirming his attachment to the university.

The exhibition, which has been running since July 31, displayed letters, manuscripts, first editions, and journals where Premchand’s works were first published, in addition to books, reports and dissertations on his life and works. Also included in the exhibit were a series of illustrated posters of his famous quotes by established artists.

Premchand is arguably one of the foremost writers in Hindustani (Hindi and Urdu) literature and played a central role in helping to communicate and shape marginalized voices in Indian literature. He contributed towards Jamia’s secular, anti-colonial mission during the financial hardships of the austere 1930s. It is worth noting that Maktaba Jamia was the first publisher of his acclaimed short story Kafan in 1935, and published the Urdu edition of his last novel Godaan in 1939.

The exhibition drew attention and interest by students, faculty, and visitors of all types and added to the celebration of Premchand’s literary legacy as an opportunity to reflect on his special relationship with Jamia Millia Islamia.
