A Journey through Time: AMU to Honour 208th Birth Anniversary of Sir Syed in Traditional Splendour

Aligarh, October 11: Mr. Justice Abdul Shahid, Judge, Allahabad High Court, will serve as the Chief Guest at the commemoration of the 208th birth anniversary of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, scheduled to be held on October 17.

He will arrive at Gulistan-e-Syed, the venue of the programme, at 10:45 a.m., in an iconic Victorian era horse-drawn chariot, accompanied by grandeur and ceremony. AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Naima Khatoon, will accompany the Chief Guest to the venue, where they will be received by members of the Riding Club.

Distinguished scientist, Dr. S. P. Somanath, Former Chairman, ISRO and Chancellor, Chanakya University, Bengaluru, will be the Guest of Honour, while Ms. Milee Ashwarya, Senior Vice President, Penguin Random House, will attend as the Special Guest.

Dr. Somanath was the Chairman of ISRO, when Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the moon, on August 23, 2023.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Khatoon, will deliver the presidential address, and the Chief Guest will also address the gathering during the function.

The Registrar, Professor Aasim Zafar, will deliver the welcome address.

Professor Feza Tabassum Azmi, Department of Business Administration, and Professor M. Quamrul Hooda Faridi, Chairman, Department of Urdu, will deliver the English and Urdu speeches respectively, focusing on the vision, philosophy, and educational mission of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Two AMU students will also speak on the occasion.

The Chief Guest will confer the Sir Syed Excellence Awards, International and National upon Professor Faisal Devji (University of Oxford) and Dr. Abdul Qadeer, (Chairman of the Shaheen Group of Institutions), respectively.

He will also present awards to the winners of the All India Essay Writing Competition, organized by the Public Relations Office, on the theme “Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh Movement: A Rational Approach to Secular Education in India.”

Professor Rafiuddin, Dean, Students’ Welfare, will deliver the vote of thanks, followed by the University Tarana and the National Anthem.

The day’s proceedings will begin with a Quran Khwani (Quranic Recitation) after the Fajr (daybreak) prayer at the University Mosque at 6:00 a.m., followed by the traditional ‘Chadar Poshi’ at Sir Syed’s grave.

The Vice Chancellor will inaugurate an exhibition of Sir Syed’s writings and books, and also launch new publications related to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, at the Sir Syed Academy at 9:30 a.m.

The traditional Sir Syed Day dinners to mark the occasion will also be held at various halls of residence across the University.
