ISSP Foundation Day Celebrated at J.N. Medical College with Focus on Neuropathic Pain Awareness

Aligarh, The Department of Anaesthesiology, J.N. Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in collaboration with the Aligarh City Branch of the Indian Society for the Study of Pain (ISSP), celebrated ISSP Foundation Day 2026 with an academic programme dedicated to raising awareness about neuropathic pain. The event was organised in line with the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) global theme on neuropathic pain, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis, effective management, and patient education.

Welcoming the participants, the Chairperson, Department of Anaesthesiology, Prof. Hammad Usmani, highlighted the growing burden of neuropathic pain and stressed the need for its timely recognition, accurate diagnosis, and comprehensive multidisciplinary management to improve patients’ quality of life.

Addressing the gathering, the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Mohd Khalid, emphasised the increasing prevalence of neuropathic pain and called for greater interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure better treatment outcomes. The Principal and CMS, JNMC, Prof. Anjum Parvez, highlighted the importance of awareness, early intervention, and advancements in pain medicine in reducing suffering and improving the quality of life of affected individuals.

The programme was also attended by the Medical Superintendent, Prof. Naiyar Asif, and the Vice-President of the Aligarh City Branch of ISSP, Prof. Ashish Mittal, who motivated students and healthcare professionals to remain committed to excellence in pain management and patient care.

A major attraction of the programme was a poster presentation competition by postgraduate students, who creatively simplified the concept of neuropathic pain for patients through informative and innovative posters. In a unique patient-centric initiative, the posters were evaluated by patients and their attendants attending the pain clinic, encouraging effective scientific communication while incorporating the perspectives of healthcare beneficiaries.

The winners of the poster competition were felicitated during the valedictory session by the distinguished dignitaries. The team comprising Dr. Utsav, Dr. Sabahat, Dr. Nazish, Dr. Sona, and Dr. Samira won the first prize, while the team comprising Dr. Asim, Dr. Naushad, Dr. Khurshid, Dr. Sadiq, and Dr. Shivam received the second prize. Faculty members, postgraduate students, interns, nursing staff, patients, and their attendants actively participated, making the celebration a meaningful blend of academic learning, patient engagement, and community outreach. The event reaffirmed JNMC’s commitment to promoting excellence in pain medicine, medical education, and compassionate healthcare.
