Professor Shabina Nishat Omar currently serves as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. Simultaneously, she is the Professor and Head of the Department of English at Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Her academic career spans more than two decades, during which she has earned widespread respect as an educator, administrator, researcher, trainer, and public intellectual.
Before joining her present institution, she spent 19 years at Milli Al-Ameen College for Women, where she served as Professor of English and Principal-in-Charge for nearly 15 years. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in modernizing the institution, strengthening academic standards, and creating a student-friendly learning environment. She has also been associated with several prestigious institutions, including St. Xavier’s College, Presidency University, and Aliah University, where she contributed significantly to English language teaching and curriculum development.
Beyond classrooms and administrative offices, Professor Omar has consistently advocated for women’s empowerment through education. She has mentored countless young women, especially first-generation learners from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, encouraging them to pursue higher education and professional careers. Many of her former students have gone on to become teachers, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs, researchers, translators, designers, and professionals across diverse sectors.

Professor Omar’s academic excellence has earned her recognition beyond India. She was nominated by the United States Department of State for the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), through which she visited leading American universities and participated in academic and leadership exchanges. This international exposure further strengthened her contributions to higher education and educational policy. She has also contributed as a resource person for Government of India initiatives, preparing educational modules on English Language Teaching and Gender Studies for SWAYAM under the ARPIT programme, thereby promoting digital education across the country. Professor Shabina Nishat Omar’s contributions have been recognised through numerous prestigious honours, including Teaching Excellence Award – Global Educator in English (2023), Damini SHE Award (2021) for promoting women’s empowerment through education, Rotary Award for Teacher Training (2019)., DISRUPTT Women’s Leadership Award (2018) for outstanding leadership and Loreto College Alumni Achievement Award (2011) recognising her academic excellence and public service.
Apart from her teaching responsibilities, Professor Omar has undertaken several important leadership roles. She serves as Bursar and Internship Nodal Officer at her college, actively promoting industry-academia collaboration and practical learning opportunities for students. She has also been associated with academic responsibilities at the University of Calcutta and has served as State President of the West Bengal Higher Education Council under the Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI).
