A portrait of Mahatma Gandhi created by Lithuanian artist Darius Tamkevičius has been gifted to the National Gandhi Museum & Library in New Delhi on the occasion of the anniversary of the Baltic Way.
The artwork highlights the shared spirit of Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance and the peaceful struggle for freedom in the Baltic States. The Baltic Way was a historic peaceful protest in which people across Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands to express their desire for independence.
The portrait serves as a symbol of the connection between India’s freedom movement and the Baltic nations’ peaceful pursuit of freedom. Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, peace and civil resistance continue to inspire movements for justice and freedom around the world.
The gesture by the Lithuanian artist also reflects the cultural and historical ties between India and Lithuania, while bringing attention to the universal relevance of Gandhi’s message of peaceful resistance.
