Books. A book of forgotten songs by Jim Morrison and Leonard Cohen. A book with a film script by Satyajit Ray. A book called ‘Small is Beautiful’. A book of laughter and forgetting. A book with a faded petal, two leaves, and a lost, hand-written letter from the past. A book of Bob Dylan’s songs. A book which tells a story. A book. One book. Many books. Books.
By Umesh Kumari
Not just a pile of pages
They open the closed doors of the deepest inner mind
Every word hides an universe
Which the world wants to keep shackled, locked
There,
books speak…

This is not just a simple game of paper and ink
These are indelible, eternal documents of time’s journeys
Every moment of innocence and purity is a witness of the past
They teach us
the philosophy of love…
They are humming
the songs
of loyalty,
love
separation…

Sometimes, they explain some things to you
softly
Sometimes,
they reveal the mirror of truth
The realism of life covered by layers of dust
It breathes in their words
The stories of those martyrs
whom time has forgotten
Books keep them alive
forever…

There is a whole universe pulsating inside them
Where every character is alive
A deep, deep feeling is breathing again…

Put your head in their lap
Then,
the meaning of life
slowly
unravels…

Sometimes,
a mutiny is declared
Sometimes,
there is a sudden urge to pray
Sometimes,
it becomes a shadow of comfort
Sometimes,
the thorns of questions prick…

Books are such friends that never say goodbye
No matter how much the world changes
They are always there…
Waiting,
for
your
return…
