Dr Faiza Rifaat, a Muslim woman from Jaipur, Rajasthan, recently addressed the 58th Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva, where she emphasized India’s progress and challenges regarding human rights and gender equality. In her address, she not only highlighted these crucial aspects, but also shared her views on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).  

Dr Rifaat presented a balanced perspective on the state of human rights in India, appreciating the government’s efforts while also drawing attention to areas where further improvement is needed. Speaking on gender equality, she advocated for policy reforms to empower women and eliminate gender discrimination.  

Her remarks on the UCC reflected a thoughtful analysis of the possibilities of implementing a uniform civil code and its associated socio-cultural impacts.
