Chocolate is more than just a sweet treat in Belgium; it’s a treasured part of the country’s history. Belgium has a long history of making chocolate. There are more than 2,000 chocolatiers in the country, from small family-run shops to well-known global brands like Godiva, Neuhaus, Callebaut, The Belgian, and Puratos.

Many of these brands are also available in India. In 1912, Jean Neuhaus changed the chocolate world forever by creating the first praline, a filled chocolate that gave people a richer, more complex experience than the usual solid bite.

This one new idea changed how chocolate was made and enjoyed all over the world. The tradition is still going strong today. The Wieze chocolate factory is the biggest in the world and makes an incredible 260,000 tons of chocolate every year for markets all over the world.

Brussels Airport, on the other hand, is the busiest chocolate shop in the world, selling about 1.5 kg of chocolate every minute. Today July 7 is International Chocolate day so it’s the perfect time to celebrate one of Belgium’s best gifts to the world: its chocolate.
