AMU Inaugurates Week-long Seerat-un-Nabi (PBUH) Programme

ALIGARH, October 25: The inaugural session of the week-long “Seerat-un-Nabi (PBUH) Programme,” organized by the Seerat Committee of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), was held yesterday evening at the University’s Strachey Hall.

The chief guest, AMU Registrar Prof. Asim Zafar, highlighted the universal mission of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him-PBUH)’s teachings, noting that through his guidance, a once-weak nation rose to prominence. He urged students and scholars to follow the Prophet’s example in their pursuit of knowledge and expressed full support for establishing a Seerat Academy at AMU.

In his address as the guest speaker, Dr. Razi-ul-Islam Nadwi, Secretary, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, said that participating in Seerat gatherings is a great blessing, noting that expressing love for the Prophet (PBUH) is an essential part of faith. He added that the AMU campus has a long tradition of devotion, exemplified by its founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who responded passionately and scholarly to derogatory remarks about the Prophet by William Muir.

Speaking on the historical background of the Seerat Week, Dr. Nadwi mentioned that the tradition was initiated by Allama Shibli Nomani at his residence. As participation grew, the venue was shifted to Salar Manzil and later to Strachey Hall, where the tradition continues uninterrupted to this day.

In his presidential address, Prof. Mohammad Habibullah Qasmi, Dean, Faculty of Theology said that remembering the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is a source of blessing and a reflection of true faith. He highlighted the Prophet’s exemplary character, shown in his honesty, forgiveness, patience, and kindness.

Earlier, Prof. Mohammad Rashid, Convener, Seerat Committee and Chairman, Department of Sunni Theology, delivered the welcome address. The session began with a recitation of the Holy Qur’an by Qari Mohammad Azam, followed by a Hamd (praise of Allah) rendered by Qari Mohammad Ajmal.

The programme was conducted by Dr. Raihan Akhtar, and concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Mohammad Asim Khan.
