In a significant milestone for India’s maritime and defence preparedness, President Droupadi Murmu undertook a submarine sea sortie aboard INS Vaghsheer, a Kalvari-class submarine built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited with transfer of technology from France’s Naval Group.

The President’s onboard experience reflects the nation’s confidence in its indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem and the operational readiness of the Indian Navy’s submarine arm. The Kalvari-class submarines form a critical component of India’s underwater warfare capability, enhancing surveillance, deterrence, and strategic reach in the Indian Ocean region.

The event also underscores the depth of the India–France defence partnership, which has played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s self-reliance in advanced naval platforms through technology transfer, skill development, and industrial collaboration.
