ALIGARH : The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University, has successfully performed its first Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) for the excision of a thoracic tumour, marking a significant advancement in minimally invasive surgical care at the institution.
The patient had reported pain in the neck and chest, and investigations revealed a tumour attached to the spinal column. The surgery was performed by a team comprising Dr Mohd Azam Haseen, Dr Syed Shamayal Rabbani and Dr Aamir Mohammad.
Anaesthesia support was provided by Dr Manazir Athar and his team. The patient was successfully extubated on the operating table, indicating stable intraoperative and postoperative recovery.
Dr Mohd Azam Haseen, Chairperson, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, said that while thoracic surgeries had long been performed through open procedures in the department, the addition of the VATS technique had significantly enhanced the department’s surgical capabilities.
Dr Aamir Mohammad described the case as challenging because the tumour originated from the spinal column, while Dr Syed Shamayal Rabbani highlighted the advantages of the VATS approach, including faster recovery and better cosmetic outcomes.
The surgical team was assisted intraoperatively by Salman, Aslam and Kamran, while postoperative care was managed by Nursing Officers Suhail, Kailash and Rinku. Resident doctors involved in patient care included Dr Azeem, Dr Parv, Dr Irfan and Dr Harshit.
Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof Mohammad Khalid, said the successful surgery reflected the advanced level of surgical planning and perioperative care available at JNMC. Principal and CMS, Dr Anjum Parvez, congratulated the team and reiterated the institution’s commitment to quality healthcare at affordable cost.
Medical Superintendent Dr Naiyyer Asif described the achievement as a proud moment for JNMC and said that such advanced surgical procedures reflected the growing expertise of the institution.
