Reykjavík, Iceland is celebrating Women’s Rights Day today, commemorating the historic milestone achieved on June 19, 1915, when King Christian X signed a revised constitution granting women the right to vote and stand for parliamentary elections.
The annual observance honours the women and activists whose efforts advanced gender equality and expanded democratic participation in the country.

Since the landmark reform, Women’s Rights Day has served as an opportunity for Icelanders to reflect on the progress made toward equal rights and to recognise the contributions of those who paved the way for future generations.
Gender equality continues to be a cornerstone of Iceland’s foreign policy, with the country actively promoting women’s empowerment, justice and equal opportunities worldwide. Through its international engagement, Iceland advocates for policies and initiatives aimed at strengthening the rights and representation of women and girls across the globe.
