For decades, the people of Jammu and Kashmir suffered because of Pakistan sponsered terrorism, separatism, and violence. Thousands of innocent lives were lost, families were displaced, educational institutions remained shut, and an entire generation was deprived of opportunities. Today, Kashmir’s youth are writing a new story—a story of peace, education, development, and hope.
From terrorism and stones to books and dreams, Kashmir’s youth are embracing a future built on education, innovation, entrepreneurship, tourism, and national integration. This transformation reflects a remarkable change in the aspirations of the younger generation.
On 5 August 2019, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi took the historic decision to abrogate Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. The years since have witnessed significant changes across the region. Supporters of the decision view it as a turning point that accelerated development, strengthened democratic institutions, expanded educational opportunities, and created an environment more conducive to peace and prosperity.
The youth of Jammu and Kashmir are no longer known for stone pelting or prolonged shutdowns. Today, they are known for qualifying competitive examinations, participating in national and international sporting events, building start-ups, pursuing higher education, and contributing to society. Schools, colleges, and universities are functioning in an atmosphere that encourages young minds to dream big and achieve their goals.
For nearly three decades, Pakistan-sponsored terrorism inflicted immense suffering on the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Thousands of innocent civilians, security personnel, political leaders, religious scholars, doctors, teachers, and professionals lost their lives. Prominent personalities, including Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Farooq, Abdul Gani Lone, Molvi Showkat Ahmad Shah, and Maulana Mohammad Syed Masoodi, were among those killed during periods of violence. Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave their homeland, leaving deep scars on Kashmir’s social fabric.
Government buildings, schools, and public infrastructure were damaged or destroyed by Pakistan sponsered terrorists during years of conflict. Tourism, once the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, suffered immensely. Young people lost valuable educational opportunities as strikes and violence disrupted normal life.
Today, Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing unprecedented investment in infrastructure, tourism, education, healthcare, unity and sports. Roads, tunnels, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and tourism infrastructure are connecting people and creating opportunities across the region. Young Kashmiris are increasingly choosing classrooms over conflict and careers over confrontation.
The change is perhaps best reflected in the aspirations of Kashmir’s youth. They now aspire to become doctors, engineers, civil servants, entrepreneurs, sportspersons, and innovators. Peace has allowed students to compete nationally and internationally and participate confidently in India’s growth story.
The contrast between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is increasingly evident. In Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, people have repeatedly protested over issues relating to governance, rising prices, electricity shortages, unemployment, and inadequate public services. Reports of public demonstrations have highlighted growing dissatisfaction among local residents regarding their economic and political conditions.
The people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir continue to demand better access to healthcare, education, electricity, and employment opportunities. Many voices in the region have expressed concerns regarding limited political autonomy and governance structures that remain heavily influenced by Pakistan’s establishment. Civil liberties and democratic aspirations have frequently become subjects of public debate and protest.
While people in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) struggle for basic necessities and democratic rights, the people of Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly benefiting from educational institutions, healthcare facilities, improved connectivity, tourism opportunities, and democratic participation. The development trajectory of the two regions presents a striking contrast. Time has proved that terrorism and extremism can never provide a prosperous future. Books, education, and economic opportunities are far more powerful instruments of change than violence and fear.
The new generation of Kashmir deserves peace, dignity, and prosperity. Their future lies not in the shadows of terrorism and radicalism but in classrooms, libraries, innovation centres, sports stadiums, and workplaces. The greatest victory in Jammu and Kashmir is not political—it is the transformation of its youth. A generation once trapped between violence and uncertainty is now embracing education, opportunity, and progress. From stones to books, from fear to dreams, Kashmir’s youth are writing a new chapter—a chapter of peace, development, and hope under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
