August 5, 2026, marks the seventh anniversary of the historic abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of the erstwhile State of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories. This landmark decision by the Government of India has ushered in a new era of peace, development, justice and opportunity for the people of Jammu & Kashmir. The last seven years have transformed the region in ways that were unimaginable for previous generations.
For decades, Jammu & Kashmir suffered from terrorism, separatism, corruption, political uncertainty and developmental stagnation. Thousands of innocent lives were lost, generations of youth were deprived of opportunities, and normal life remained hostage to violence and disruptive politics. The abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, has emerged as a turning point in the history of Jammu & Kashmir and has firmly integrated the region into India’s growth and development story.
The present security framework under the Union Government has played a vital role in maintaining peace and dismantling the ecosystem of terrorism, separatism and Pakistan-sponsored propaganda that plagued the region for decades. Cross-border attempts to radicalise and destabilise Jammu & Kashmir have been effectively countered through strong governance, security measures and developmental initiatives.
Article 370 was often projected as a symbol of identity and special status. However, in practice, it largely benefited a handful of regional dynastic political parties while depriving ordinary citizens of equal opportunities and constitutional rights enjoyed by the rest of the country. It allowed divisive and separatist narratives to flourish for nearly seven decades. Pakistan repeatedly exploited the prevailing political circumstances to fuel terrorism, radicalisation and instability in Jammu & Kashmir.
Today, the youth of Jammu & Kashmir have overwhelmingly embraced the path of peace, education and nation-building. The politics of stone-pelting and shutdowns has been replaced by the aspirations of becoming doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, sportspersons, scientists, innovators and civil servants. Young Kashmiris are increasingly identifying themselves as contributors to India’s progress and development.
The transformation is visible across every sector. Educational institutions now function throughout the year without disruption. Students are pursuing their dreams with confidence and competing successfully at national and international levels. International-standard universities, colleges and medical institutions are creating a generation of skilled professionals committed to building a stronger India.
Sports infrastructure has witnessed revolutionary growth. Modern stadiums, playgrounds and sports academies have been developed across Jammu & Kashmir. Thousands of young boys and girls are participating in sporting activities and representing India at national and international events. Several young athletes from Jammu & Kashmir are now competing at the highest levels, demonstrating that talent flourishes when peace prevails.
Tourism has reached unprecedented heights, creating employment and economic opportunities for thousands of families. Jammu & Kashmir has become one of India’s most attractive tourist destinations, welcoming millions of visitors every year. Improved roads, tunnels, highways and connectivity projects have brought remote areas closer to mainstream economic development.
Healthcare infrastructure has undergone remarkable improvement with the establishment of new medical colleges, modern hospitals and enhanced healthcare facilities. The people of Jammu & Kashmir are today benefiting from some of the largest welfare and healthcare initiatives launched by the Government of India.
Women empowerment has emerged as one of the most inspiring success stories of New Jammu & Kashmir. Women are benefiting from Central Government schemes related to education, entrepreneurship, healthcare, financial inclusion and self-employment. They are actively participating in leadership, business, education, sports and public life like never before.
Perhaps one of the most significant achievements has been the strengthening of democracy. Following the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu & Kashmir witnessed historic voter participation in democratic processes. High voter turnout reflects the people’s growing trust in democratic institutions and their commitment to shaping a peaceful and prosperous future within the framework of the Indian Constitution.
The social fabric of Jammu & Kashmir has also grown stronger. Hindu-Muslim brotherhood, communal harmony, cultural traditions and religious coexistence continue to flourish. People are celebrating their festivals, preserving their rich heritage and embracing modern opportunities in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect.
The abrogation of Article 370 has ensured that the people of Jammu & Kashmir enjoy the same constitutional rights, welfare benefits and developmental opportunities available to every citizen of India. Schemes related to housing, healthcare, education, financial assistance and social welfare have reached the grassroots level, directly benefiting ordinary citizens.
While the people remain focused on peace, development and nation-building, some regional dynastic political parties continue to view the restoration of statehood primarily through the prism of political power. The recent protest organised by the National Conference at Jantar Mantar demanding statehood has been viewed by many as a political exercise aimed at diverting attention from governance-related challenges and unfulfilled electoral promises. The Union Government has already reiterated its commitment in Parliament to restore full statehood to Jammu & Kashmir at an appropriate time.
Seven years after the historic decision of August 5, 2019, Jammu & Kashmir stands transformed. Its aspirations are no longer defined by conflict but by education, employment, entrepreneurship, tourism, sports, innovation and democratic participation. The greatest achievement of this transformation is a generation of young Kashmiris who have chosen hope over fear, opportunity over violence and peace over uncertainty.
Today, Jammu & Kashmir is writing a new chapter in its history—one of peace, development, democracy and national integration. It is emerging as a proud contributor to the vision of a strong, prosperous and developed India. The story of New Jammu & Kashmir is, in many ways, the story of New India itself—confident, inclusive, resilient and full of possibilities for generations to come.
