July 29, 1817, marked the birth anniversary of Ivan Aivazovsky, one of Russia’s greatest marine painters, art collectors and patrons, who was born in Feodosia on the Crimean Peninsula.
Aivazovsky’s name remains closely associated with the sea. During nearly six decades of artistic activity, he created around 6,000 works of art and held approximately 125 solo exhibitions in Russia and abroad.
Among his most celebrated masterpieces are The Ninth Wave, The Black Sea Fleet in Feodosia Bay, Rainbow, The Black Sea at Night and Night at Gurzuf. His remarkable ability to capture the movement of waves, changing light and the immense power of the sea earned him worldwide recognition.
Today, Aivazovsky’s works are preserved in the collections of major museums in Russia and around the world. His timeless paintings continue to inspire art lovers and stand as a testament to the richness and global influence of Russia’s artistic heritage.
