Jamia Students Organise Awareness Programme on Disability and Inclusion

New Delhi: Students of M.Ed. Special Education (SLD & VI), 3rd Semester (Session 2025–27), from the Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education (IASE), Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia, organised a Disability and Inclusion Awareness Programme on August 10, 2026, at Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, Noor Nagar, Jamia Nagar, Okhla, New Delhi.

The programme aimed to raise awareness about accessibility, inclusion, and the rights and needs of persons with disabilities. It was organised under the patronage of Prof. Anita Rastogi, Dean, Faculty of Education, and Prof. Farah Javed Farooqui, Head of the Department, with the supervision of course coordinators Dr. Mohd. Faijullah Khan and Dr. Saurabh Ray.

The programme began with an introduction to the importance of inclusive education in ensuring equitable, accessible, and quality education for all learners. The students also discussed the principles of inclusion in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

A “Wheel of Inclusion” activity was conducted to spread awareness about different disabilities, including hearing, visual, intellectual, locomotor, specific learning disabilities, and autism spectrum disorder. Six students participated in the activity and shared brief insights about each disability.

A thought-provoking skit titled “Nazariya” highlighted the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and emphasised the importance of accessibility, empathy, equal rights, and social inclusion. Interactive activities such as “Famous Personalities and Their Disabilities” and “Passing Balloons Through Knees” further encouraged students to challenge stereotypes and develop empathy.

Suresh Kumar, Vice Principal of Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of empathy, equal opportunities, and inclusive practices in education.

The programme concluded with the National Anthem, presented both in sign language and through vocal rendition, symbolising the spirit of inclusion and accessibility. The organisers expressed their gratitude to the school authorities, principal, faculty members, guests, and participants for their support and active participation in making the programme a success.
