Workshop on Mental Health Organized at AMU to Promote Emotional Well-being Among Students

ALIGARH, November 11: A one-day workshop on the theme “Mental Health” was organized under the joint auspices of the Club for Short Evening Courses (CEC) and the Cultural Education Centre, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The workshop aimed to raise awareness among students about mental well-being and to discuss effective ways of maintaining a balance between academic responsibilities and social life.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest, SP Crime, Aligarh, Ms. Manisha Kurian, emphasized the need for young people to contribute to building a drug-free society. She urged students to stay alert against cybercrimes and to make use of official helpline numbers and applications for timely redressal of grievances. Cautioning against the overuse of mobile phones, she remarked that while technology can be a valuable learning tool, excessive use leads to distraction and loss of focus. She also underlined the importance of constructive engagement between the police and the public to foster social harmony and address contemporary challenges.

The workshop featured three expert speakers who discussed different dimensions of mental health.

Dr. Sarmad Aziz, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry, highlighted the scientific aspects of mental well-being and encouraged students to develop self-awareness and emotional stability. He described “digital detox” as an effective way to restore mental calm and improve concentration.

Dr. Rikza Parvez, Clinical Psychologist and Consultant, spoke about the equal importance of mental and physical health. She shared stress management strategies and reminded students that real success lies in balance and self-care rather than in constant competition. She urged the youth to nurture compassion and contribute to building a healthier society.

Dr. Syed Noor Alam, Islamic Scholar and Spiritual Leader, discussed the spiritual dimension of mental peace, stressing that self-discipline and spiritual awareness can help individuals attain positivity and inner calm.

Prof. Mohammad Naved Khan, Coordinator, Cultural Education Centre, remarked that the CEC remains committed not only to academic enrichment but also to nurturing creativity, cultural values, and emotional well-being among students.

Presiding over the programme, Dean, Students’ Welfare, Prof. Rafi Uddin, appreciated the initiative and said such workshops are of great relevance in the present context. He encouraged students to make the best use of university facilities and cultivate inner peace and contentment.

Earlier, welcoming the guests, Dr. Ahmad Mujtaba Siddiqui, President, Club for Short Evening Courses, emphasized the importance of open communication between teachers and students and stated that mental health is both an individual and collective responsibility vital for a healthy community.

The programme was conducted by Ms. Joya Khan, and the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Zubia Masood. Members of the Club, including Mr. Hasan and Mr. Azeem, along with a large number of students and faculty members, attended the event.
