Regional Seminar Strengthens Cooperation to Combat Waste Trafficking in South and Southeast Asia

On 24–25 June, a regional seminar on combating waste trafficking in South and Southeast Asia brought together government officials, law enforcement agencies, international organizations, and environmental stakeholders to strengthen regional cooperation against the illegal waste trade.

The seminar provided a platform for participants to exchange practical techniques, share best practices, and discuss collaborative approaches to tackling waste trafficking at national, regional, and international levels. Representatives from several countries affected by the issue engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing enforcement, improving coordination, and building stronger partnerships.

The event featured contributions from representatives of UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), Veolia, INTERPOL, Shahabdeen Luckman, DGDDI, and CESAN, whose expertise enriched the dialogue on addressing environmental crime and promoting sustainable waste management.

As part of the program, participants also visited Moware Design, where they were introduced to innovative upcycling initiatives that transform Himalayan waste into functional design products and works of art. The visit highlighted the role of creative and sustainable solutions in reducing waste and supporting a circular economy.

The seminar concluded with a shared commitment among participants to continue strengthening regional collaboration and advancing practical measures to combat waste trafficking while promoting environmental sustainability.
