AMU, University of Houston Complete Collaborative Research on Cancer Caregivers

ALIGARH, A collaborative research project jointly led by Dr. Samina Salim, Associate Professor, University of Houston College of Pharmacy, USA, and Prof. Mohammad Akram, Department of Radiotherapy, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, has been successfully completed, marking a significant milestone in the academic partnership between the two institutions established through an MoU signed in December 2025.

The study, titled Caregiving Burden, Quality of Life, and Cognitive Vulnerability Among Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study from India, examined the psychological, social, and cognitive impact of cancer caregiving among 100 family caregivers.

At AMU, the clinical component was led by Prof. Mohammad Akram and Dr. Samreen Zaheer, while psychological assessments were coordinated by Dr. Sarah Javed, Department of Psychology, AMU. Student researchers Dr. Afreen Khanam, Afreen Kamal Farooqui, Dr. Amir, Mohammad Aarim, Uzma Fatima, Alina Zaidi, Adeena Suhail, and Mohammad Sumam also contributed to the project. The University of Houston team included Dr. Samina Salim, Dr. Fatin Atrooz, and Prof. Susan Abughosh.

Supported by the Global Faculty Development Award of the University of Houston’s Institute of Global Engagement, the project is expected to contribute to a better understanding of caregiver burden and strengthen future collaborative research in cancer care, mental health, and global health between the two universities.
