UN Warns of Ethnic Cleansing of Palestinians as Israeli Operation Displaces Thousands in West Bank

The United Nations has raised serious concerns over Israel’s ongoing military operation in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank. UN human rights chief Volker Türk warned that the operation could lead to ethnic cleansing, as thousands of Palestinians have been forced to leave their homes.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said aid agencies are helping local authorities in Hebron respond to the growing needs of affected residents.

The displacement has increased concerns about the safety and living conditions of Palestinian families. The situation is developing amid heightened tensions ahead of Israeli elections.

Mr. Türk said the operation had demolished homes and commercial property, and deprived residents of the ability to move freely.

The operation began after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint near Hebron on Friday, killing two soldiers and wounding three others. Both gunmen were killed.

“The sweeping steps taken raise grave concerns of unnecessary and disproportionate use of force – which must end,” Mr. Türk said in a statement.
