On the morning of June 9, the quiet town of Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh erupted in celebration. The name Majid Hussain was on every lip—from tea stalls to school corridors—as news spread that their very own boy had secured All India Rank 3 in the JEE Advanced 2025 exam, one of the toughest entrance tests in the country for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
For Majid, the journey to this remarkable achievement wasn’t built overnight. It was a blend of relentless effort, unshakable self-discipline, and deep-rooted values.
Humble Beginnings
Born to a modest family, Majid’s father, Yusuf Hussain, runs a small electrical repair shop in Khandwa, while his mother, Shabana Begum, is a homemaker. The family of five lived in a small rented house in the town’s Itwara locality. Despite financial constraints, Majid’s parents prioritized education. They believed that knowledge, more than wealth, could truly transform lives.
“I knew he was special when he started fixing household gadgets at the age of 8,” recalls Yusuf Hussain with pride in his eyes. “But it was his curiosity in science and maths that truly stood out.”
Majid’s early schooling happened in a local Urdu-medium government school until class 8. There, his teachers quickly noticed his exceptional mathematical aptitude. With the help of scholarships and the support of his elder sister, who gave up her own higher education dreams to help the family financially, Majid transitioned to a reputed CBSE school in Indore in Class 9.
The Turning Point
It was during a school science exhibition that Majid first heard of IITs. “A senior explained to me what IIT is and that it was the dream of every engineering aspirant. That night I searched for everything about it on my second-hand smartphone,” Majid remembers.
Realizing the fierce competition, Majid joined a local coaching centre, and later moved to Kota, Rajasthan in Class 11 after securing a scholarship from a private coaching institute based on a national talent test.
Kota, known for its high-pressure environment and intense study schedules, wasn’t easy. “I missed home, my mother’s food, and the quiet of Khandwa. But I kept reminding myself why I was here,” Majid says.
Hard Work, Strategy & Sacrifice
Majid’s preparation strategy was unique. He focused on understanding core concepts deeply rather than just solving problems mechanically. “I always believed that JEE is not about mugging formulas but about applying them creatively,” he explains.
He maintained a disciplined routine—studying for 10 to 12 hours a day, ensuring enough sleep, and keeping Sundays for revision and mental detox. He stayed away from social media and even declined to use WhatsApp groups to avoid distractions.
When asked about his source of motivation, Majid humbly replies, “My parents’ sacrifices and my dream to prove that small-town students can achieve anything if given the right chance.”
He also credits his faith for keeping him grounded and focused. “Whenever I felt low, I would pray. It gave me peace and helped me re-center.”
The Results & Reactions
On June 9, when the JEE Advanced results were announced, Majid was sitting in the masjid after Fajr prayer. “I didn’t want to see the result alone. I wanted to be at peace, no matter the outcome,” he says.
It was only when a friend from Kota called, shouting with joy, that Majid realized he had not only cleared the exam but secured All India Rank 3.
“My hands were trembling. I ran to my parents and showed them the screen. We all cried—tears of joy, relief, and gratitude,” Majid says, smiling.
Local leaders, school teachers, coaching mentors, and even strangers began visiting his home. Social media was flooded with congratulatory posts. The district administration felicitated him the next day.
A Message for Aspiring Students
Despite his towering achievement, Majid remains grounded. “I want to tell every student from a small town or an under-resourced background—don’t underestimate yourself. It’s okay to have less, but dream big. With consistency and the right intent, anything is possible.”
Majid now plans to pursue Computer Science at IIT Bombay, with aspirations of working in artificial intelligence and later contributing to educational reforms.
“I want to build tech tools that make quality education accessible to every child in India, especially in small towns and villages like mine,” he says.
