In his meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to resolve the border issues, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, “History and reality prove once again that a healthy and stable China-India relationship serves the fundamental and long-term interests of both of our countries.”

He also said, “It is also what the developing countries all want to see.”

According to BRICS News, Wang Yi said, “India is a partner, not a rival.”

Wang Yi and Doval are holding the day-long 24th round of the Special Representatives talks on boundary questions. Wang Yi is on a two-day visit to India during which he is also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the evening.

Both the leaders met warmly, as is seen in this video clip posted on X:

In his opening remarks at the meeting, Ajit Doval told Wang Yi, “In the past 9 months situation at the border has improved, it has remained peaceful and quiet, bilateral engagements have been substantive. We are grateful to our leaders, who met in Kazan & set a new trend for the relationship.”

He said, “…There has been an upward trend. Borders have been quiet. There has been peace and tranquillity. Our bilateral engagements have been more substantial. And we are most grateful to our leaders who, in Kazan last October, were able to set a new trend, and we have profited a lot since then. The new environment that has been created has helped us in moving ahead in the various areas that we are working on…”

Responding to his host, the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, “The Chinese side attaches great importance to the Prime Minister (Modi’s) visit to China to attend the SCO summit at our invitation. We believe that the Indian side will also contribute to a successful summit in Tianjin.”

The Chinese Foreign Minister made his initial remarks in Mandarin, which were later read into English by a translator.

To Doval’s remarks on the tranquillity on the border, Wang Yi said, “We are heartened to see the stability that is now restored on the borders.”

Referring to their meeting in Beijing last year, Wang Yi said, “We had a very good 23rd round of special representatives talks at the end of last year. At that meeting, we reached a new and important consensus on the management of disagreements, stabilising the borders, and moving toward a settlement. We identified specific goals and formed a working framework. We are heartened to see the stability that is now restored on the borders.”

He praised NSA Doval for his efforts as special representative of the Indian side.

“Now the bilateral relationship is facing an important opportunity for improvement and growth,” he said.

Wang Yi also held talks on bilateral relations with External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Monday evening.
