Prof. Aasim Zafar Appointed as New Registrar of Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh, September 11, 2025 – Professor (Dr.) Aasim Zafar, a distinguished faculty member of the Department of Computer Science at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been appointed as the new Registrar of the University, effective from September 11, 2025. He assumed the position from the outgoing Registrar, Mr. Mohammad Imran (IPS).

Prof. Zafar brings over 29 years of teaching, research, and administrative experience at both national and international levels. He holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Applications and a PhD in Computer Science from AMU. His research expertise spans Mobile Ad hoc and Sensor Networks, Image Processing, Video Analytics, Information Retrieval, E-Systems, E-Security, Virtual Learning Environment, Neuro-Fuzzy and Soft Computing, and Software Engineering. He has published more than 100 research papers in reputed international journals and conferences and has successfully guided 11 PhD scholars.

Renowned for his contributions to academic development, Prof. Zafar has been a resource person at national Faculty Development Programmes, Refresher Courses, and Orientation Programmes across India. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he trained over 5000 faculty members in ICT-enabled pedagogy and e-learning.

Prof. Zafar also served a five-year international teaching assignment at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, where he successfully led three funded research projects and achieved the prestigious ABET accreditation for the Faculty of Computing & Information Technology. He was awarded the “Excellence in Teaching Award” at KAU.

At AMU, Prof. Zafar has played a pivotal role in ICT infrastructure development and academic administration. He previously served as Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and is currently Officer-on-Special Duty (Development). He is also the UGC SWAYAM Coordinator, Coordinator of the IGNOU Study Centre at AMU, Convener of the University Website Committee, Convener of the Digital Monitoring Cell, and a member of CIQA and CDOE, among various high-powered committees formed by the Vice Chancellor.

Under his leadership, AMU faculty launched 75 new MOOCs on the SWAYAM platform between 2024 and 2025. He played a key role in implementing the NMEICT-EdRP Project funded by MHRD, Government of India, developing a multilingual Library Management System and an Election Management System for the university.

Prof. Naima Khatoon, Vice Chancellor of AMU, expressed her appreciation for Mr. Mohammad Imran (IPS), highlighting his dedicated service and efficient governance. She congratulated Prof. Zafar, recognizing his vast academic and administrative experience as a valuable asset for the University.

Prof. M. Mohsin Khan, Pro Vice Chancellor, also congratulated Prof. Aasim Zafar and acknowledged the notable contributions of Mr. Mohammad Imran (IPS) during his tenure as Registrar.
