Even after the war in Gaza has ended, people’s lives have not become safe. According to Julius van der Waart, head of the United Nations Mine Action Program, unexploded bombs lying all over Gaza have become the biggest threat, and children are the most affected by them.
He said that the Israeli attacks, which went on for more than two years, have filled the whole of Gaza with dangerous explosive materials. After the ceasefire, millions of people are returning to their homes, but the unexploded bombs lying on the roads and inside houses are putting their lives at risk.
The UN team has been working in Gaza since October 2023 and has so far found more than 650 dangerous bombs and IEDs. They are in such a sensitive state that even slight disturbance can make them explode.
Van der Waart said that Gaza’s small area and dense population make the situation even more difficult. People are unable to avoid these bombs even if they want to. The danger is even greater for children, as they tend to touch anything while playing.
He made a strict appeal to the people not to touch any suspicious object at all and to report it immediately, as these bombs can cause a deadly explosion at any moment.
