Russian Folk Art Shines in Delhi: Khokhloma-Painted Elephants by Nikas Safronov on Display

New Delhi, December 22 – An exquisite glimpse into Russia’s ancient folk art is currently on display at the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi, where the iconic Khokhloma style takes center stage. Celebrated Russian artist Nikas Safronov has painted a series of life-sized elephant sculptures in the vibrant Khokhloma technique, a craft that traces its origins back to the 17th century.

Born in the village of Khokhloma in the Nizhny Novgorod region, the art form is believed to have been developed by Old Believers—icon painters who mastered the technique of creating a gold-like finish without real gold. Characterized by lush floral and berry motifs—particularly red rowan and strawberries—along with images of birds, fish, and animals, Khokhloma painting features a rich color palette of red, gold, green, yellow, and blue.

Originally used to decorate wooden spoons, bowls, and ladles, Khokhloma has evolved into a globally recognized symbol of Russian cultural heritage, influencing modern fashion, interior design, and art.

Today marks the final day to view this unique Khokhloma elephant exhibit in Delhi. From December 25 to January 15, the collection will be on display at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai.
