Aligarh, A Disaster Awareness Camp was inaugurated at the Aligarh Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition at the Proctor Office Camp Area. The camp has been organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, Z.H. College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), with the aim of spreading awareness about natural and man-made disasters and ways to mitigate their impact.
The camp showcases several working models prepared by students and staff of the department. These models demonstrate structural safety measures and rainwater harvesting systems. Posters depicting various disasters, including earthquakes, floods, cyclones, landslides, and man-made environmental hazards, have also been put on display. Live videos highlighting precautionary and safety measures for different types of disasters are being screened for visitors. Informative literature on disaster preparedness and safety is being distributed among the public. The eight-day camp will be manned by students and staff members who will educate visitors throughout the exhibition.
The inaugural function was attended by the Chief Guest Prof. M. Mohsin Khan, Pro Vice Chancellor, AMU; Prof. Asim Zafar, Registrar; Prof. Razaullah Khan, former Chairman, Civil Engineering Department; Prof. Mohd Waseem Ali, Proctor, AMU; Prof. M. Muzammil, Principal, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology; and Mr. Noorul Salam, Finance Officer, AMU.
Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. M. Mohsin Khan spoke about the history of organising such awareness initiatives and commended the department’s efforts. Prof. Asim Zafar stressed the need for greater awareness about both natural and man-made disasters. Prof. Razaullah Khan pointed to human activities as a major cause of environmental imbalance leading to disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods.
The programme began with the welcome address by the Chairperson of the Department, Prof. Izharul Haq Farooqi, who highlighted the usefulness of the camp. Prof. M. Muzammil spoke on the importance of disaster awareness and outlined preparedness and mitigation measures. Prof. Mohd Waseem Ali appreciated the efforts of the department for organising the camp at an exhibition that attracts lakhs of visitors daily.
Prof. Rehan A. Khan delivered the vote of thanks and acknowledged the contributions of students and staff in organising the event. The inaugural function was conducted by Prof. M. Masroor Alam.
