Iceland-India Partnership Brings Geothermal Heating to Indian Army Posts in Himalayas

In a significant boost to sustainable defence infrastructure, geothermal energy technology originating from Iceland’s volcanic landscapes is now being used to heat Indian Army facilities in the high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh.

Clean energy company Geotropy has successfully installed an advanced geothermal space heating system, designed to operate reliably in some of India’s most challenging terrains. The system provides off-grid, eco-friendly heating, reducing dependence on conventional fuel sources in extreme weather conditions.

The development marks a tangible example of growing cooperation between India and Iceland, particularly in the field of renewable energy. Officials view this project as a step forward in integrating sustainable technologies into defence operations while addressing environmental concerns.

The initiative also aligns with the objectives of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which aims to enhance economic collaboration and facilitate the exchange of advanced technologies between partner nations.

Experts believe such collaborations could pave the way for wider adoption of geothermal solutions across other high-altitude and remote regions in India.
