In April 1975, India marked a historic achievement in space exploration with the launch of its first satellite, Aryabhata, named after the renowned Indian astronomer and mathematician Aryabhata. The satellite was launched from the Kapustin Yar Soviet cosmodrome using the Kosmos-3M rocket.

Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the mission aimed to provide India with valuable experience in designing and operating satellites. Aryabhata was equipped to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy, solar physics, and the study of the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

The successful launch not only marked India’s entry into the space age but also stood as a symbol of strong scientific cooperation and mutual trust between India and Russia, laying the groundwork for future collaborative space initiatives.
