A deeply heartbreaking scene has emerged from the Silwan neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem, where a Palestinian resident was forced to demolish his own home with his own hands. Juma Mohammed Qarain, a resident of the Al-Bustan neighborhood, demolished his house himself on Friday with a heavy heart.
This house was not just a structure made of bricks and stones, but a place filled with a family’s memories, hard work, and peace. The home, consisting of two rooms and one bathroom, had been built on nearly 500 square meters of land. But after orders from the Israeli authorities, Qarain was left with only two choices: either demolish his home himself, or face heavy fines and pay the costs of demolition carried out by the municipality.
In the end, he was forced to watch his dreams crumble by his own hands. Not only did he have to demolish his home, but he was also compelled to remove the trees planted on his land and tear down the metal sheets surrounding the property.
According to media reports, Palestinian families are often forced into such situations where they have no choice but to demolish their own homes in order to avoid extremely heavy financial penalties. This is not just the demolition of houses, but a continuing pressure on people’s lives, their hopes, and their sense of a secure future.
