‘Who Is Next?’ Campaign Launched Following Death of Palestinian Detainee Imad Sarhan, Raising Concerns Over Sick Prisoners

West Bank: Following the death of Palestinian detainee Imad Sarhan inside an Israeli prison, the Palestinian Center for the Defense of Prisoners has launched a media campaign titled “Who Is Next?” The organization says the initiative aims to alert the international community and draw urgent attention to the deteriorating conditions faced by sick prisoners in Israeli detention facilities.

According to the center, Sarhan is the 90th Palestinian prisoner to die in Israeli custody since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza. The organization also stated that 327 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody since 1967.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the center’s director, Lina Al-Tawil, described the continued international silence over conditions inside Israeli prisons as deeply concerning. She warned that unless immediate attention is given to the situation, more detainees could lose their lives in the coming period.

According to Al-Tawil, the title “Who Is Next?” reflects growing fears over the fate of sick prisoners. She said that alleged systematic medical neglect and escalating abuses inside Israeli detention facilities are placing detainees—particularly those with existing health conditions—at increasing risk.

Al-Tawil said Sarhan’s death has raised urgent questions about the future of sick prisoners, warning that conditions inside the prisons have become a direct threat to their lives.

The center alleges that Palestinian detainees are being subjected to unprecedented punitive measures, including solitary confinement, starvation, physical assaults, and denial of medical treatment.

Al-Tawil stated that these conditions are placing hundreds of ill prisoners at constant risk and effectively turning their medical conditions into what she described as “delayed death sentences.”

The week-long campaign will focus on highlighting the health and humanitarian conditions of sick detainees, documenting their daily suffering, and drawing international attention to alleged medical neglect inside Israeli prisons.

The center has called on the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and human rights organizations to take urgent action. It urged these bodies to help protect sick Palestinian prisoners, pressure Israeli authorities to halt the alleged abuses, and ensure detainees receive adequate medical care.
