AMU Psychiatry Department Observes International Day Against Drug Abuse with Awareness Programme

ALIGARH, The Department of Psychiatry, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with the Department of Physiology, observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with an awareness programme aimed at promoting a drug-free society and encouraging healthy lifestyles among students and young adults.

The programme began with an inaugural address by Dr. Anwar Hasan Siddiqui, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology. Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Mohammad Khalid, and Principal, JNMC, Prof. Anjum Parvez, highlighted the growing public health challenge posed by substance use disorders and stressed the role of educational institutions in promoting awareness and prevention.

Delivering an educational talk on substance abuse prevention, Prof. Mohammed Reyazuddin, Chairperson, Department of Psychiatry, discussed the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs, emphasizing that substance use disorders are preventable and treatable through timely intervention and professional care.

As part of the observance, the Department also organized a poster competition for school and college students to promote awareness about substance abuse prevention and mental health. Saima Iqbal (Class VI) secured the first prize, followed by Afzal Equbal (Class XII) in second place and Mohd Ayan Khan in third.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Mohd Aslam, Chairperson, Department of Physiology.
