A 67-year-old Palestinian prisoner, Ata Hassan Attiya Rmeilat, also known as Abu Rmeileh, has been sentenced to 42 months in prison by an Israeli military court. The court also imposed a fine of 5,000 shekels.
The sentence comes despite repeated concerns over his worsening health and his urgent need for medical treatment.
According to his son, Alaa Abu Rmeileh, Israeli forces arrested his father on October 31, 2023, after raiding his home in Jenin. He said his father was assaulted during the arrest and has since been held under harsh detention conditions, while appearing before the court several times.
Serious Heart Condition
Abu Rmeileh suffers from serious heart problems and requires specialized medical care, including open-heart surgery. His deteriorating condition had already raised concerns among those monitoring his case.
In March 2025, the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs warned about the seriousness of his health condition. At the time, his weight had fallen to less than 40 kilograms, while his heart condition required urgent treatment and regular medical follow-up.
Prominent Figure in Jenin
Abu Rmeileh is a well-known political and organizational figure in the Jenin governorate. He serves as secretary of the Fatah branch in Jenin and has remained active in the region’s political and community affairs for many years.
His latest sentence has renewed concerns over the treatment of Palestinian prisoners, particularly those suffering from serious illnesses. Calls continue for sick detainees to receive necessary medical care and for their basic rights to be protected while in custody.
