Centre for West Asian Studies (CWAS) Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi, organised a special lecture on “The Iran War and Its Implications for West Asia and World Politics” on September 18, 2026, at the Conference Hall of India Arab Cultural Centre, JMI. Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi, Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Faculty of International Studies, South Asian University, New Delhi, was the speaker, and Prof. H.A. Nazmi (Director, CWAS) chaired the session, while Prof. Anisur Rahman, convener of the seminar, CWAS, moderated it.
Prof. H.A. Nazmi, Director of CWAS, JMI, as chair of the event, thanked the Vice Chancellor, JMI, Prof. Mazhar Asif, and Registrar, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, for their encouragement of organising such events which create the environment of research and promote the academic activities on the campus. In his welcome address, he also thanked the speaker for accepting the Centre’s invitation to deliver the special lecture on this pertinent topic. Prof. Anisur Rahman introduced the guest and the theme of the lecture, highlighting the Iran-US war and its implications on West Asia in particular and the world in general.
Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi, examining the recent conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, believed that the discussion moved beyond a purely military reading of the conflict to interrogate the strategic, economic, ideological, and emotional dimensions that shaped its trajectory and outcomes. The speaker framed the war as a case study in miscalculation, one that exposed the limits of conventional international relations theory and revealed shifting patterns of global power. He explored that the conflict was widely assessed as a blow to the long-standing American image as the principal net security provider in the Middle East. Dr Tripathi further emphasised that the conflict fits into a broader pattern of strategic miscalculation by state actors, where intended outcomes diverge sharply from actual results, specifically a caution against overconfidence in military solutions to political problems.
Through the question and answer session the participants debated whether the conflict’s outcomes constituted a genuine strategic defeat for the US, given the gap between stated objectives, China’s growing regional role, the survival of Iran’s economy, and India’s calibrated position amid the Iran-US-Israel conflict, reflecting New Delhi’s broader strategy of balancing its energy, strategic, and diplomatic interests across competing blocs.
Prof. Sebastian N, on behalf of the Centre delivered a formal vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the speaker of the session and congratulated the Director, Prof. H. A. Nazmi, and convener Prof. Anisur Rahman for hosting the lecture successfully and also thanked the audiences, including faculty members of various centres and departments and research scholars and students, for being present on this special occasion.
