ALIGARH, September 24: The Department of Chemical Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) Students Chapter, AMU, organized an invited lecture on “Indian Knowledge System (IKS)—A Long Perpetual Journey and New Paradigms for the Future” at the University Polytechnic Auditorium.
Prof. I.M. Mishra, Professor (Retd.), IIT Roorkee, and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, delivered the lecture, while Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, former Vice Chancellor, AMU, graced the event as the Chief Guest.
In his lecture, Prof. Mishra described the Indian Knowledge System as a dynamic and evolving enterprise rather than a static repository of knowledge. He emphasized the need to integrate IKS into curricula at all levels of education, as envisaged under NEP 2020. He also called for introspection and course correction in the education and research system to develop a progressive knowledge base capable of addressing future challenges. He highlighted the intellectual contributions of ancient Indian universities and other centers of learning.
In his presidential remarks, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez appreciated Prof. Mishra’s insights and encouraged students to cultivate curiosity, critical inquiry, and a sense of societal relevance in their academic pursuits.
Prof. Mohammad Hassan, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, underlined India’s rich intellectual heritage in science, mathematics, astronomy, culture, and education and its contribution to subsequent scientific advancements.
Prof. Mohammad Muzammil, Principal, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, highlighted the significance of integrating IKS into engineering education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Earlier, Dr. Sheeba Jilani, Chairperson, Department of Chemical Engineering, delivered the welcome address. Prof. Ahmad Tariq Jameel, Organizing Secretary, provided a historical perspective on the Indian Knowledge System and its contemporary relevance. He emphasized the need for a dialogue between traditional wisdom and contemporary knowledge in shaping the future of knowledge creation.
Dr. Parvez Khan, Coordinator, IIChE Students Chapter, proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Fatima Khan and Ms. UmmeAiman hosted the programme, which was attended by faculty members, students and other members of the university community.
