Shortage of Bicycle Spare Parts Deepens Gaza’s Transportation Crisis

The transportation crisis in the Gaza Strip has intensified as a severe shortage of bicycle spare parts and soaring prices make it increasingly difficult for residents to keep their bicycles operational. With most vehicles out of service due to fuel shortages and widespread destruction, bicycles have become the primary means of transportation for thousands of Palestinians.

The availability of spare parts has dropped sharply, while prices have risen several times over. Components that were once inexpensive are now either extremely costly or nearly impossible to find. As a result, bicycle repair shops are struggling to meet growing demand. Many mechanics have been forced to reuse damaged parts or modify old components to keep as many bicycles on the road as possible.

The crisis is being worsened by damaged and uneven roads, which cause frequent breakdowns and accelerate wear and tear. This has significantly increased the need for repairs at a time when essential maintenance supplies remain scarce. Many residents search across Gaza for replacement parts but often return empty-handed, while those who do find them are frequently unable to afford the inflated prices.

As fuel shortages continue to limit vehicle use and public transportation remains severely disrupted, bicycles have become more than just a mode of transport. They now serve as a vital lifeline, enabling people to travel to work, deliver goods, and maintain daily activities. However, the growing shortage of spare parts is making it increasingly difficult for residents to rely on the only transportation option still widely available.
