Aligarh : Dr. Kaukab Quder Meerza (1933–2020), the last surviving great-grandson of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and Begum Hazrat Mahal, was not only a scion of royal lineage but also a dedicated scholar and teacher at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
A distinguished academic, Dr. Meerza earned his Ph.D. in Urdu from AMU, focusing on the literary and cultural contributions of his royal ancestor, Wajid Ali Shah. He went on to serve as a Professor of Urdu at AMU for decades, retiring in 1993. His lectures brought the rich culture of Lucknow and Metiabruz alive for generations of students.
Dr. Meerza’s expertise also reached beyond the classroom. He was consulted by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray to ensure historical authenticity in the film Shatranj Ke Khilari, which depicted the opulence and intrigue of the Oudh court.
Beyond literature, Dr. Meerza had a surprising passion for sports. He was the Founder-Secretary of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India and officiated at international tournaments, blending royal poise with sporting precision.
Spanning 87 years, his life exemplified the belief that true nobility lies not in titles, but in the pursuit of knowledge, culture, and service.
