Sri Lanka–Belgium Parliamentary Friendship Association Revived; Susil Ranasinghe Elected President

The Sri Lanka–Belgium Parliamentary Friendship Association has been formally revived with the election of Sri Lanka’s Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Hon. Susil Ranasinghe, as its President for the Tenth Parliament.

The inaugural meeting of the renewed association was held at Parliament, with Belgium’s Honorary Consul in Sri Lanka, Koenraad Pringiers, attending as Guest of Honour. He addressed members in the presence of Hon. Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, highlighting the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties.

Looking ahead, both sides announced plans for political consultations in Brussels next month and progress on several key bilateral agreements, including those related to diplomatic employment, avoidance of double taxation, and debt restructuring with Credendo.

Belgium reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with Sri Lanka, underscoring shared commitments to democracy, the rule of law, and multilateral cooperation. The country also reiterated its support for Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, sustainable development, and deeper engagement with the European Union, including through trade and development cooperation frameworks.
