At just fourteen years of age, Mohammad Yasser has scripted a story that has inspired an entire generation in Jammu and Kashmir. Hailing from the border district of Rajouri near the Line of Control, Yasser recently created history by becoming the first boxer from the Union Territory to win a gold medal at the Under-15 Asian Boxing Championship held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan From May 1 to May 16, 2026. His remarkable achievement has not only brought pride to his hometown but has also become a symbol of resilience, determination, and hope.
Yasser’s journey to international success was far from easy. Born into a modest family, his life changed dramatically in 2018 after the death of his father. The tragedy pushed the family into severe financial hardship. With no stable source of income, his mother, Naseem Akhter, began working as a domestic helper in different households to support the family and ensure that her children continued their education. Despite the difficult circumstances, she never allowed her son’s dreams to fade away.
While many children his age were enjoying carefree childhoods, Yasser was balancing studies, boxing practice, and occasional odd jobs to help his family. Yet, he never allowed poverty to weaken his spirit. Instead, every hardship became fuel for his ambition. His campaign began with a dominant 5-0 victory over Tajikistan in the pre-quarterfinals. He then defeated Kazakhstan with another commanding 5-0 performance in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, he outclassed his Iranian opponent with a 4-1 win, securing his place in the final.
The final bout against the host nation Uzbekistan was the toughest challenge of his career. Competing in front of a home crowd and under immense pressure, Yasser remained calm and focused. Displaying remarkable courage and tactical maturity far beyond his age, he defeated the Uzbek boxer 4-1 to clinch the gold medal for India.
