Seminar in Kerala Marks 135th Birth Anniversary of Mikhail Bulgakov

A literary seminar commemorating the 135th birth anniversary of celebrated Russian novelist and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov was jointly organised on May 15 by the Office of the Honorary Consul of Russia in Thiruvananthapuram and the Russkiy Mir Foundation. The event witnessed the participation of noted writers, critics and scholars from across Kerala.

In his inaugural address, writer C. Anoop highlighted Bulgakov’s enduring global appeal, attributing it to the author’s masterful blend of political satire, philosophical depth, dark humour and imaginative fantasy. He noted that Bulgakov’s works continue to resonate with readers across generations for their timeless and emotionally honest storytelling.

The keynote address was delivered by Govindan Nair, former Head of the Department of Russian at the University of Kerala and recipient of the Pushkin Medal. Govindan Nair, who translated Bulgakov’s acclaimed novel The Master and Margarita into Malayalam, spoke about the writer’s literary significance and influence on world literature.

Other speakers included Dr Anilkumar, who holds a PhD in Russian studies with a focus on satire in Bulgakov’s works, and Kavitha Nair.
