The establishment of a library and information science department at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been approved after nearly forty years. A significant advancement in academic progress has been made with the approval of six teaching positions for the university by the Ministry of Education.
The Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B. Lib. I. Sc.) program at JMI has been offered since 1985 without a permanent faculty. This approval will revitalize the program and enable more robust research and instruction.
The Prime Minister, Education Minister, Ministry of Finance, and UGC were thanked for their support of the proposal by JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi.

According to them, this choice marks a significant turning point for the university. In order to prepare future librarians to manage both traditional and digital collections, Prof. Asif shared his vision.
In the digital age, Prof. Rizvi emphasized the value of libraries and the necessity of preparing students for the future. Up until now, contract and guest teachers have taught the course.
The 105-year-old university, whose Central Library was established in 1920—the same year JMI was founded—is proud of this development.
