Celebrating 400 Years of India–Lithuania Friendship and Shared Heritage

As two ambassadors were awarded the prestigious award “For Merits to the Friendship of Lithuania and India,” there was a historic celebration in Rusnė, Lithuania.

The two nations commemorated their joint historical milestones and sought to further their relations. It was the several significant anniversaries, such as the 130th anniversary of the first recorded arrival of an Indian in Lithuania, the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Jesuit missionary Andrew Rudamina in Goa, and the 10th anniversary of the monument of Mahatma Gandhi and Hermann Kallenbach.

Indian ambassador Devesh Uttam and Lithuanian ambassador Diana Mickevičienė were awarded the award. Ambassador Mickevičienė was recognized for her research work, her best-selling book “All My India,” and efforts to further Indo-Lithuanian relations.

As the first Indian representative to reside in Lithuania, Ambassador Uttam was thanked for initiating initiatives for cultural and economic cooperation. The celebration also commemorated the launch of “Rudamina,” a book on the life of the first Lithuanian in India.

Jivanji Modi, a professor of Bombay University, who visited Kaunas in 1895 and later assisted Lithuanian traveler Antanas Poška in settling in India, was especially highlighted. The significant event underlined the close and increasing friendship between Lithuania and India, founded on mutual respect, scholarly research, and common values.
