In celebration of World Environment Day, the Hall of Girls’ Residence (HOGR) at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a vibrant plantation drive and launched key sustainability initiatives across the hostel campus.
The event commenced with a solemn ‘Green Pledge’ administered by Prof. Rana Noor Provost, Hall of Girls’ Residence (Old). Undertaken by a large gathering of hostel residents, staff, caretakers, and wardens of HOGR, the pledge reinforced a collective commitment to protecting the environment and adopting eco-friendly habits in daily life.

Aligned with the national campaign, the plantation drive was themed “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in the Name of Mother). Prof. Rana Noor along with Prof. Nikhat Manzoor, Provost, J&K Girls’ Hostel, and Dr. Meena Usmani, Offg Provost of the Begum Hazrat Mahal (BHM) Hostel, participated in the plantation of saplings at multiple locations across the campus. The hostel administration made a formal undertaking to expand this campaign, ensuring more trees will be planted throughout the hostel campus to maximize green cover.
In a major step toward water conservation, HOGR also announced the successful completion of the second phase of its RO wastewater recycling initiative.
In pursuance of its efforts to ensure sustainability in action, the hostel has successfully channelled the reject wastewater from its Reverse Osmosis (RO) purification systems. This recycled water is now being actively used to sustain the campus gardens and green patches during the harsh, peak summer months, significantly reducing groundwater consumption.

The enthusiastic participation of the resident students and campus workers underscored HOGR’s ongoing dedication to nurturing an eco-conscious, self-sustaining, and healthier living environment for the university community.
