France and India Deepen Blue Economy Partnership to Boost Sustainable Fisheries and Ocean Resilience

New Delhi, France and India have reaffirmed their commitment to building a sustainable and climate-resilient future for the oceans through a joint initiative aimed at transforming India’s fisheries sector.

Marking World Oceans Day under the theme “Catalysing Action for Our Ocean and Climate,” the initiative is supported by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the World Bank. It seeks to promote innovation, sustainability and climate resilience across India’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.

The sector plays a vital role in India’s economy and livelihoods, directly employing nearly 28 million people. Women form a significant part of the workforce, with approximately 4.8 million engaged in small-scale fisheries activities across the country.

Developed under the India-France Roadmap on the Blue Economy and Ocean Governance, the project focuses on creating smarter and more sustainable fisheries systems, improving the safety and quality of fish products, and expanding access to financing and insurance for small businesses in coastal communities.

Officials said the initiative reflects the shared commitment of France and India to protecting marine ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also encourages the exchange of knowledge, technology and best practices to address global environmental and climate challenges.

Implemented in partnership with the Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the project aims to support healthier oceans while fostering innovation and long-term sustainability in the blue economy.

The collaboration underscores the growing strategic partnership between France and India, with both nations continuing to work together on ocean conservation, climate action and sustainable development.
