Aligarh, The Centre for Skill Development and Career Planning (CSD&CP), Aligarh Muslim University, celebrated World Youth Skills Day 2026 by organizing a three-day hands-on skill training workshop on crochet, titled “Hook, Yarn & Creativity: Learn Crochet from Scratch”, from July 13 to 15, followed by a Skill Exhibition showcasing participants’ creative works.
The exhibition featured projects completed by students enrolled in garment making; fashion illustration and sketching; textile designing; and other skill development programmes conducted by the Centre in recent months. The event was attended by Dr Shamim Akhtar, Director, Centre for Continuing and Adult Education and Extension; Prof. Salman Khalil, Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College; and Dr Mohammad Shakir, Department of Education, AMU.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shamim Akhtar emphasized the importance of skill-based education in empowering youth, fostering creativity, and promoting lifelong learning.

Prof. Salman Khalil praised the creativity and entrepreneurial potential displayed by the participants and urged them to transform their newly acquired skills into opportunities for self-employment and income generation.
Dr. Mohammad Shakir commended the enthusiasm of the students and observed that such programmes significantly contribute to personality development, employability, and the growing interest of youth in skill-oriented learning.
The exhibition was coordinated by Dr Samreen Hasan Khan, Student Counsellor, CSD&CP, along with trainers Ms Adiba Saleem, Ms Sanower, and Ms Zeenat Bano. Dr Khan highlighted that such initiatives provide a valuable platform for developing practical skills, creativity, self-reliance, and micro-entrepreneurship.
The crochet training sessions were conducted by Ms Zeenat Bano, proprietor of Creative Crochet, who introduced participants to the basics of crochet through interactive demonstrations and practical sessions covering stitches, yarn handling, pattern development, finishing techniques, and the creation of decorative and utility products.
Around 50 students participated in the workshop. A slogan-writing competition on the World Youth Skills Day 2026 theme, “Skills for a Shared Future”, also drew enthusiastic participation from over 20 students. The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to participants of the workshop, competitions, orientation sessions, and other skill development activities organized by the Centre.
